They Called Me Uncivilized: The Memoir of an Everyday Lakota Man from Wounded Knee

They Called Me Uncivilized: The Memoir of an Everyday Lakota Man from Wounded Knee

Walter Littlemoon's memoir, They Called Me Uncivilized, is a call to awareness from within the heart of Wounded Knee. In telling his story, Littlemoon describes the impact federal Indian policies have had on his life and on the history of his family. He gives a rare view into the cruelty inflicted on generations of Native American children through the implementation of U.S. government boarding schools, which resulted in a muted truth, called Soul Wound by some. In addition, and for the first time, his narrative provides a resident's view of the 1973 militant Occupation of Wounded Knee and the lasting impact that takeover has had on his community. His path toward a sense of peace and contentment is one he hopes others will follow. Remembering and telling the truth about traumatic events are prerequisites for healing. Many books have been written by scholars describing one aspect or another of Native American life, their history, their spirituality, the 1973 occupation, and a few have tried to describe the boarding schools. None have connected the dots. Until the language of the everyday man is used, scholarly words will shut out the people they describe and the pathology created by federal Indian policy will continue.

A Teacher's Tale: A Memoir

A Teacher's Tale: A Memoir

It was never in author Joe Gilliland's plan to become a teacher, certainly not a college teacher and most certainly not an English teacher. But that's what happened, and he's never looked back. In A Teacher's Tale, he explains, how by neither planning for nor seeking a life of learning and teaching, lacking a syllabus or lesson plan, he discovered that a life in academe lay in his path-a path he's followed for more than fifty years. A Teacher's Tale begins in 1932 with Gilliland's first experiences in schooling and concludes in the summer of 1955 just as he completes his apprenticeship and stands on the brink of becoming a qualified instructor in a small college in east Texas. This memoir presents a collection of stories about his experiences as a teacher and a college student. A story of schooling deeply immersed in the arts and humanities, A Teacher's Tale shares Gilliland's love of the university and how it compelled him to seek a life devoted to teaching, primarily in the community college arena. Through this narrative, he brings together a philosophy of higher education based on the importance of arts and humanities in today's high- tech world.

Tilli's Story: My Thoughts Are Free

Tilli's Story: My Thoughts Are Free

Tilli Horn is a five-year-old farm girl in a tiny village in eastern Germany when World War II begins. Her family opposes Hitler's Nazi Party, but is powerless to rebel. Tilli is forced to join a Hitler Youth group and participate in Nazi propaganda. As the war intensifies, she endures air-raid drills, nearby bombings, and constant fear. After the war ends, Russian soldiers invade Tilli's village, sending 11-year-old Tilli and a dozen other girls into hiding in a secret attic - a three-foot tall, dark, cramped space, where they remain for months lest they be assaulted. These and other details show what life was like for ordinary rural German children like Tilli under both Hitler and Stalin's regimes. Tilli's compelling memoir follows this brave young girl's fight to live in a place where not just her thoughts can be free. Recommended for teens and adults.

Hair Raising Stories: Humorous and heartwarming true tales from a stylist's years of experience

" HAIR RAISING STORIES" is a book about a number of my experiences as a hairdresser. Being in the business for twenty seven years, I have encountered many walks of life that have come through the salon door and have sat in my chair. The stories are all true,( believe me, I`d be hard pressed to make half this stuff up!) Although geared toward hair dressers world wide, it has universal appeal. There are many lessons to be learned throughout life and many lessons I have learned by working with the public and through my clients themselves. Many are humorous and will tickle the funny bone, while others will pull and tug at the heart. The reader will be drawn in and know they are not alone as they will be able to relate to some or most of the stories.

Boy Does World: Fifteen Years of Bad Behaviors, Bad Attitudes, and Happy Endings

Boy Does World: Fifteen Years of Bad Behaviors, Bad Attitudes, and Happy Endings

It’s a big world. Somebody’s gotta do it. As a kid in rural Kentucky, Sean Bugg dreamed of the day he would make it to the big city. When he got there, the small town boy found himself in a big-town world of sex, love, parties, fashion disasters, some more sex, boyfriends, ex-boyfriends, and―finally―true love. “Sean was fearlessly funny in a fearful era clouded by AIDS, and Boy Does World is a wonderful chance to enjoy a retro romp into that past. It’s also an affirming look at some happy endings―the hard-won, worth-fighting-for future of gay equality and domestic bliss.” ― Hank Stuever, author of Tinsel and Off Ramp “Sean’s story of sexual discovery is one that many gay men will relate to, but it’s written in a funny, insightful way that few other writers could match.” ― Craig Seymour, author of All I Could Bare: My Life in the Strip Clubs of Gay Washington, D.C.

Fire in the Hole: A Year in the Life of the World's Sorriest Stuntwoman

Fire in the Hole: A Year in the Life of the World's Sorriest Stuntwoman

Fire in the Hole is the comically dramatic story of a thirty-something actress facing serious changes in her life while training to become a stuntwoman at a quirky western theme park. Over the course of a year, she divorces her lesbian partner of eight years and loses her sister to suicide. A move from the frenzied urban sprawl of Los Angeles to the tranquil desert of Albuquerque does not improve her spirits, but it does allow her to continue her acting career...at the small-time theme park. Oddly, the misfits she works with at the theme park and even a few of the regular customers become somewhat of a dysfunctional, yet much-needed, family. While learning to fall from a two-story roof and harmlessly kick a man in the groin, she struggles to survive the rockiest and most emotional year of her life. Two at a Time: Reflections and Revelations of a Kansas State University Presidency and the Years That Followed.

Two at a Time: Reflections and Revelations of a Kansas State University Presidency and the Years That Followed.

When Duane Acker assumed the presidency of Kansas State University on July 1, 1975, he inherited both the management team of his 25-year predecessor and their operating traditions. Though universities were past the student unrest days of the Viet Nam era, the average tenure of university presidents was only three and a half years. Acker told his friends his goal was to "survive for six years and stay no more than ten." Acker shares anecdotally and with some humor a sample of his encounters, several involving pairs. There were the two horse blankets that could not be found for President Reagan's visit, red-in-the face "debating" by two basketball coaches, the two staff tenure systems he found, his two trips to China and the two franchises he wanted, "lines in the sand" with two local bankers, whether two regents had made their way to Heaven, and strategies that yielded two new building projects at one time, twice. Two at a Time provides a telling glimpse into the life of a state university president and the challenges faced, as well as satisfactions that the presidency yielded for him and his wife. Acker also shares later experiences, and shows that life doesn't end after a university presidency.
