"I am fascinated with the role technology plays in the creation of art, as well as its obsolescence in the wake of human progress. This relationship between art and its process is well illustrated by the history of traditional Japanese woodblock; the printing technology that was integral to the rise of Ukiyo-e also ultimately contributed to its downfall. By combining antiquity with anachronism, past and (near) present, my goal is to create a new context for the art that is seemingly transcendent of history." In Flash (Green), Fischer thematically pairs with aesthetic of ukiyo-e woodblock printing, a historical yet outdated technology, with the iconic Kodak Brownie camera, indicative of similarly outdated 20th century culture. In Flash, Fischer emulates the Moronobu school of Ukiyo-e, known for line work and figure placements in black and white, with occasional decorative effects of hand applied color.
