Calibrate the instrument by inserting the tip into an ideal sample of compost or soil and adjusting the needle to a "5" on the 0 to 10 scale. Then, the next time you insert your Moisture meter you'll know relative to your ideal moisture content whether your soil is too dry or too wet. Note that this is not a % moisture content.
